Web Design Glossary #2: Mobile Optimized and Responsive Web Design

Mobile site for Skygate Media

Mobile Optimized – This is, essentially, a site specifically designed for the small screen size of a mobile device.  The mobile optimized design is often simplified based on what information users are looking for on the go.

Responsive Design – This refers to having one website with a fluid layout that adapts to the size of the screen.   Images are flexible so that they never appear too large or too small for the device they are viewed on.

While many of the top web designers advocate for the use of mobile optimized so that content can be tailored, Google has given preference to websites built with responsive design.  Professional website design is strongly influenced by factors that determine site visibility so the trend is moving towards responsive web design at this time.  With various internet analysts predicting that mobile web use will pass desktop within the next couple of years, there is an increasing awareness about the importance of a site that can meet all of its needs on a mobile device.

There is a lot to consider when making the choice to go with an optimized site or responsive web design.  Ask your website design and development company to advise you on which path to take.
